Oftentimes, we get so caught up in what heaven will be like that we lose sight of what's actually happening all around us. The miracles that are still happening today, the beauty that God has created here on earth.
But still, sometimes being on earth and seeing the worldy things around us can really hurt. We learn to feel what God feels and see the hurt and pain that people feel. We begin to empathize with those that we have the least bit in common with. Our hearts are broken for the same things that break God's heart. We forget that one day we will be in a perfect, beautiful, flawless place. A line from an episode of The Waltons (I'm oldschool, I know) states it perfectly. When asked what death is like, a character says:
"I think it's closing your eyes and instead of seeing the darkness, seeing the light."
One day, we'll be with God in the light instead of being on this dark, terribly hurting earth. It's an amazing thing to look forward to. But for now, we're here. So live out your life to the fullest so that when you're in the light, you'll be proud to have shown those around you how to get out of the darkness and into the light. Make your life count for something. Because you never know when you might be closing your eyes to the darkness for the last time.
